Dada Poem
This abstract poem was created by cutting out words from a magazine, mixing them together, and gluing them in a random order. It wasn't created to have any meaning but the reader can take away whatever meaning they get from it.

Ode To The Tiny Glasses
Your miniscule,
Blue,
Frame rests,
Above my twin caverns,
Upon my ridge,
Your frame widens,
To support the,
Massiveness,
Of my face,
I gaze through your sole,
Past your aquamarine,
Circles,
Of frail plastic,
Sheltering my retinas,
You douse,
The sun’s,
Power,
You’re rose pink,
Arms,
Stretch past,
My temple,
Striving to hook,
The ears,
You fall short,
And rest,
Eternally,
Just out of reach,
Of your,
Intentions.
Your miniscule,
Blue,
Frame rests,
Above my twin caverns,
Upon my ridge,
Your frame widens,
To support the,
Massiveness,

Harlem Renaissance Mash-Up
"Harlem" By langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode? |
“Harlem,” by Langston Hughes, reminds readers that those whose dreams are unfulfilled can either become overcome by sorrow or use their disappointment as fuel to pursue new ones is all about dreams and how you decide to pursue or not pursue those dreams. In the second line he asks whether a “dream deferred”, “dries up like a raisin in the sun?” This is representative of someone who has left their dreams behind to “dry up in the sun.” Dreams can also “Fester like a sore and then run” or “Stink like rotten meat.” These are representing the people who try to pursue their dreams, but they end up not making them happen and they see their dreams as something that just hangs around in the back of their mind and stinks. At the end, Hughes takes a positive twist with the line, “Or does it explode?” This is for all the people who follow their dreams and become successful because of it. The poem is titled “Harlem” because Hughes lived in Harlem for most of his life, so he got to see different people take all the different options he mentions in his poem. There are the ones who don’t become anything and then there's the ones who pursue their dreams and “explode.” Though this poem, Hughes encourages people to follow their dreams because that’s how to achieve happiness.

This art piece by Joseph Holston offers the reader a chance to see the struggles of the hard working people of harlem. The piece is titled “Bus stop” which is can be clearly seen in the photo. There’s a group of African Americans standing in the rain waiting for the bus. The same theme from langston hughes's poem seems to emerge again in this painting. A few of the people could be headed to a low paying job that they hate or maybe in this group there are people who are in pursuit of their dreams and are trying to make it reality. Either way, they are all going somewhere they care about enough to stand in the rain and wait for a bus.

This mash up brings the two pieces together while keeping it pretty simple. Langston Hughes' poem and Joseph Holston's art piece both have similar theses and I thought they'd connect well.
They show the struggle of the people of harlem, how people want to follow their dreams but they have to work hard to make those dreams reality.

This semester i’ve read three books of my choice. A long way gone was the easiest book to read because it was extremely easy to follow and kept me engaged the entire time. Second most difficult was Always Running, which was my favorite out of the three because the action and struggle presented in the story. Lastly, there is Into Thin Air, which was somewhat difficult to follow at times but was still a very interesting journey of a book. At the beginning of the semester I was only reading about 30 pages per week but as time went on i’ve started reading quite a bit more. I was really taking my time but as the semester went on I started to feel the pressure to finish all my books so I started reading more like 60 pages per week. On the last book I had to finish it in just over a week so that has really pushed me beyond what i’d normally do in reading. Next semester I plan on reading a total of 4 books instead of the 3 I read this semester. I want to be reading about 80 pages a week and stay on top of it as much as I can so I don’t have to try really hard at the end of the semester. I’m planning on reading “Where The Red Fern Grows” because my friend recommended it and it sounds quite interesting while still being a challenge.

In the human experience, not much is more important than art. Art is the expression of the people to represent who we are and what we stand for. It is an opportunity to search into one's self to produce something beautiful from the mind. Art is the physical form of consciousness and thought, but above all, art is beautiful. People are able to share their art and let others interpret their piece in whatever way they see it. In the Poem Ozymandias, the idea that humans shouldn’t glorify certain people because we’re really all equal. Art can portray any message it wants to. My analysis of Ozymandias is my interpretation of what I thought the poem was about, but it can be interpreted in any way a person wants to. Another example is Bus Stop by Joseph Holston, This art piece features a group of people from Harlem who are waiting in the rain for the bus. I took this and said they were likely waiting there to either go to their jobs, follow their dreams, or doing really whatever. They were all different types of people at the bus stop, ones who were working jobs they hate but need the money, or even people on the brink of making their dreams reality. Basically it shows that you never know who you could be waiting at the bus stop with until you get to know them individually. This art piece could have been seen from infinitely different angles which is what brings that wonder and mystery to art. When you create art, you pull pieces from your past knowledge, ideas, experiences, and incorporate these things all in your artwork giving it emotion and meaning. Often art is clearly drawn in a certain emotion and anyone is able to recognize what that emotion is in the art even though some people may have different opinions because for them it may make them feel something else. In simple, art is the expression of one’s self that can be interpreted in any way by others.
